Guys just don't go the extra mile to constantly put themselves places where their friends are. If a friend of mine was going to a Syria lecture that I don't have a specific reason to be at, I'd say “uh ok, have fun with that”. I wouldn't sign up for it just for more time with my friend.

Dude you are garbage for how you treated your son. Not only did you fuck his ONLY friend but then you neglected him just to spend time with some dude that you just met. Missing his birthday dinner just to get some dick? Tf is wrong with you lady? Regardless, you should go meet your son because you owe that to him but own up to be a shitty person. Genuinely apologize and tell him that you let him down. Your selfishness and generally just awfulness ruined your relationship and you need to take ownership of that.
By egocentric I mean that he doesn’t care about your stuff. Like your assessment or your appointment. He’s only concerned about himself and his plans.
I don’t see how any of this is insecurity on your part. You’re dating someone who doesn’t make time for you and isn’t interested in things that are important to you.
