This is a you problem. You need to be assertive about your needs. Doing so is neither rude nor weird. You characterizing them inviting you to dinner as an ambush is.

I thought it was done and over with years ago. I've processed it and you all are right. It is something to be worried about and we need counseling.
Hmm yeah I definitely see what you mean. He’s usually okay if I rearrange something as long as I make an effort to say we can do something on this day and time instead. He gets upset if he feels I’m not making an effort to see him sometimes, but in terms of the lift thing. I could easily make my way home in a cab and spend the night alone or I could have him pick me up, spend no money and get to stay with him too. Hence why I never decline, always seems like the better option imo
