  1. First, being alone isn't inherently worse than being in a relationship. Context is everything.

Second, you're fundamentally incompatible with your girlfriend. You should end it for that reason alone. You're forcing it for the sake of not being alone, but you're miserable. You also have a premise that it's be with her or be alone forever. There's no other women out in the world?

Finally, you're simply not ready for a relationship. If you want to have fun, have fun. It's your life. When you're single, go ahead and do that. But since you're not, you're being disrespectful to her to hang onto her for a selfish reason while your heart is completely elsewhere. Break up with her.

  2. You need to lay down a hot boundary here. She invited him to your apartment? Hell no. Tell her he is not welcome. It’s her birthday, sure, but you are not obligated to bend to the birthday girl’s every whim. That’s just wild.

I would also make it clear that you are not her buffer. She needs to stop using your friendship to aid her fucked up dating life. That is not your job.

Have you communicated any of this to her? Tried to put down boundaries? If not, now is the time to start (yes, even though it’s her birthday)

  3. Why is it shitty and heartless to rehome, to find someone who will care and love for your animals when you are no longer able to?

My first dog was rehomed, he wasn’t able to come with us when we moved (he was a cavalier King Charles, and we moved across the world), he went to live with his groomer, we got constant letters from them until he passed at 15. My first dogs in my new home were rehomed, they were from an elderly couple who couldn’t give them the love and attention they deserved anymore, so we took them in, and until the husband passed the couple would be around every few weeks to visit.

Maybe the term means something different to you, but to me rehoming is the current owner, finding and vetting someone else who can provide the love, attention and lifestyle for their animals, not just passing them off to the first person to answer an advert, or sending them to a shelter.
