I was in a similar situation. My fiancé and I had been looking for rings and early on found one she loved at an antique store. I secretly went back the week after and bought it without her knowing. I hid it for several months, while we looked at ring still. I didn't plan on waiting 3 or 4 months with the ring in my sock drawer, but I was hoping there would be a lull in us/her looking at ring possibilities and talking about our engagement, even if it was for a week or two. I didn't want it to feel like I was being pressured into asking just because I had the ring, and I didn't want her to feel like I was asking her just because we kept talking about it, etc. After a few months I finally decided one day that the next weekend I would ask her, and planned it all out (it involved a full-size fake red rose ring box that I mixed in with a bouquet of real roses) and it went great!
The point is, he's probably just waiting for the right moment. I wouldn;t read into it too miuch!
I know this is eating you up, but I think it would be best to wait a little bit. Just don't think about it. Try not to dwell on it. Tell him and a few more months.
