At a guess, it could be that he was already a little lukewarm, and his parents' opinions were enough to sway the decision. And/or there could be money involved. If he was in line to inherit a bundle, his parents might have held that over his head to get their way.

The reason he wasn’t promoted is because he lacks social skills. Rejecting an award is rude, doing it front of the team was downright disrespectful.
Lacking personal skills is honestly a really good reason to not promote someone. I wouldn’t want someone that emotional/rash as a manager, would you?
I have a hot time believe this is the only instance where he has closed off emotionally from you, and hidden something big. He doesn’t seem interested in opening up either. Only you can decide if that’s what you want from a relationship.
