You're correct, it's not as easy as it was before kids. One could be a lot more flexible and forgiving. But I don't know how we get to the point where I want to be if we can't even discuss hot things. It's this now, but next it may be discipline or school work or financial stuff… and I don't know how we would ever have those harder conversations if he shuts down so much when I simply ask him if we're heading in the same direction.
