You didn’t cause anything. He just happened to feel more for you than you do for him, it’s not anyone’s fault. And he’s pretty immature for blaming you. I can understand him distancing himself for awhile, but not blaming you.
If he has such a problem being around you since that conversation, he should be the one to not go to practice/quit the sport, not you. You’re not responsible for his feelings in any way. Yes, it might be uncomfortable for a bit, but mature people will get past it soon.
