I appreciate that you like him in most ways, and you hope he’d learn better if confronted about his prejudices by a real person. Sounds like he doesn’t have much direct experience of gay/queer people.

The part of this I don’t love is, he wants you to respect his opinion like he respects yours.

Would he respect your racist opinions if you were ignorant about people of color and didn’t know any personally? Or about other prejudices – like towards certain religions? Toward immigrants from certain places?

Would he respect the opinion of someone who thinks women are stupid and incapable, and who doesn’t personally know any women who’d serve as counterexamples?

Because it seems obvious to me, ignorance and unfamiliarity isn’t something to respect.

I’m gay. My family started out ignorant. So I don’t think this makes him a horrible person. I can respect him. I can be patient with his ignorance and unfamiliarity. I can nicely confront ignorant ideas and help someone understand me better. But I wouldn’t respect his prejudices as he says that some of the families I know are real families, and others are “not possible” and aren’t families at all.

That’s the screwy part – where he wants you to respect his opinions/prejudices as though they’re equally valid.

I didn't know what I did to upset him the last time he was mad either. He was just suddenly really nasty. It wasn't until he came around 3 weeks later that he told me what it was. He admitted it was a mistake to not tell me what was wrong and we agreed to talk things out in the future. I'm not sure what I'll say if he comes around again. I don't want this to keep happening.
