These dogs are basically puppies still, and training just takes more time. It's something that continues all throughout the dogs life. And i don't think that the dog grabbing something to chew on would constitute as dogs running the house. As a dog owner, you don't leave stuff out within reach of your young dog. A nine year old is old enough to realise that young dogs will find anything to chew on.
