Look, he did his time. However, dealing with someone who comes from a LE family, you’re fighting an uphill battle. I was married to a City Police Lt. I was taken to a cookout, and I guess he’d mentioned prior to his guys I was an “MC Princess,” I’m trying to mingle and I’m getting cold shouldered, whatever, the whispers started and then I caught wind of what was happening. I was the daughter of a “criminal.” Mind you my Dad never did ANY time. Arrested? Oh yeah. He was even arrested by his own cousin for assault of a Scab crossing a picket line. But he never did time. Then I caught on and I made sure to make it look like I was just sitting there playing with my phone, but I was actually listening to the little gossips. And when I’d had enough, I stood up, and said “Yeah, my Dad was a criminal. He would tell you that to your face. What about YOUR husband (it was one of my husbands guys)?” She sputters and said he’s a cop. I said “yeah? He’s also a criminal that hides behind a badge. He says he’s good, but he’s under IAD AND FED investigation for taking money from a towing company, and police brutality.” She looked like she was going to throw up. She knew all about it, but the self-righteousness of that mindset is mind boggling. I laughed and said “Did you think I didn’t know? It’s one of my husband’s guys, it makes HIM look bad and on top of that, it’s a serious headache for him!” Judge made an example out of him as he was first up for the 10-15 cops, and his sentence was maxed out. Federal Prison doors slammed on him quick! Oh how the mighty fall!
Point is, your wife has that self-righteous attitude, and she needs to understand a lot of cops are bad people who hide it behind the badge! Some regular people just don’t hide it. You also have to realize your Dad did something messed up, but he paid his debt, and as long as he’s doing what he’s supposed to be, your wife needs to see past those holier than thou rose tinted glasses. Remind her of how many cops are on tv now committing heinous acts against the very people they’re supposed to protect and serve.
