I think that's what i'll have to do. I don't think i'll tell her the whole truth though as I think it would destroy her. I'll definitely give her space if that's what she wants, but part of me wonders if she'll want space.

It's okay to not live together until you're married. Living close to one another and spending a lot of time together will get you everything you need to know. Unless there's a critical financial burden, having separate places is for the best.
You have a long ass talk and go get help. I had something similar but not verbal abuse. I jaded walking on eggshells, to the Point I wanted to leave. We talked, went to get some couples help and it made a would of difference. We are still together and it helped in other ways also.
