Did they tell you they didn’t like you or just ghost you? Depending on the field and the context, it could be a pretty big deal to be asked to be a reference for someone. If it doesn’t work out, the reference will look bad. It could be a big ask and a responsibility your ex coworker doesn’t want, especially if they haven’t worked with you for years or maybe liked you as a person, but didn’t think you were particularly brilliant. There isn’t really a nice way to say that though, so ghosting is the conflict avoidant route.
