It is, she had four deaths in the family in the first year, including her mother, I couldn't leave her. Then she overdosed several times, addiction not suicide, I couldn't leave her. She lost her job, I couldn't leave her. Her depression was getting worse and worse every day, I couldn't leave her. I was with her for 10 years because something new would pop up, and with every new thing it became almost easier to say I couldn't leave her, I was cementing in my own head that I was responsible for her. Which, in many ways, enabled many of her toxic behaviours.
I eventually realised that actually, none of those problems are the cause of me, and I had to draw a line in the sand somewhere. I did not say “get out of my house now”, I said “in 4 months I am leaving”, and it's month 1 haha.
