You backed yourself in a corner by asking him if he wanted anything from the country you are visiting. At this point if you don't get him those things it will make you look bad. He probably would never have asked for these items if you hadn't made the offer even in jest.
Obviously, you don't have to do anything for this man, I myself would be kicking myself in the ass for telling him to let you know what he wants from your trip. My conscience is such that I would have to try to get those things or it would bother me. So, I would do it for my own comfort and self respect.
