  1. I knew well before 20 that I didn't want kids. If you're on the fence then definitely don't get one just because. That's if you can even find a doctor willing at that age. (I had mine at 26).

Separately from that, the discussion on a future with or without kids should naturally be part of a relationship at some point. At age 20 and six months in, it's ok to say that the relationship might be terminal.

  2. u/Crazy_River3568, it looks like you're trying to post a throwaway submission. Your account is too young and/or your comment karma is too low.

The right way to do it is to create a brand new Reddit account that begins with ThrowRA.

Please create a new account that starts with ThrowRA in the username and try again. Please note that we will not make exceptions to this rule.

  3. Also it's possible that her friend influenced her toward this path but for less positive reasons. Sometimes friends will sabotage other friends relationships. . .

  4. I see where your friend is coming from. Primarily with the language you chose of, “She's taking advantage of her tan she's had for the dark skin character.”

You can cosplay characters of other races, it doesn't cause any harm to dress up as that character regardless. However that defensiveness is what may be adding to her concern.

If she always had the tan beforehand then it doesn't matter. But don't use the tan as an excuse to justify the cosplay. Try and talk with Kate and see if she felt that way about the tan even before the situation with the cosplay. If so then Kate may have things that are understandable causing her conflict and the cosplay was just the final straw.

  5. Kate doesn't know or understand what Blackface is if this is whats setting her off. It sounds like you're all in college, I would suggest you ALL sit down with a professor who focuses on racial studies and work this out. Your Asian GF having her naturally tanned skin does not create a “Blackface” experience or situation. If your GF plays into stereotypes, over exaggerates features, or attempts to mimic specific features that are associated with race, then yes – she would be committing an act of Blackface and your friend would be fully valid in being angry at you all. Does your GF have to incorporate features to dress as this character? I.e. a wig Black hair, exaggerated features, stereotyping, etc.?

You all need to be very careful about shit like this, it can seen innocuous but in reality is very damaging. Maybe talk to your angry friend more about where this is all coming from and asking her specifically why she feels this way. It would probably be beneficial to both her and your GF to have an open and honest dialog about race, characterization, and problematic actions in cosplaying. Being Asian doesn't give her a pass and being Black doesn't make your angry friend “right” but it sounds like there's more to this that needs to be addressed. Either way they should take it as a learning moment and talk to a professional. Historians, sociologists, anthropologists, African studies department, etc. Seek someone out.
