My gutter punk fiancé has a type, other weirdos who have relatable lived experience. My fiancé was a homeless gutter punk, suicide riding train kid and was used to sleeping under bridges. I’ve never struggled with homelessness but I have lots of friends and family members who have. Our standards of living were the hardest thing we had to overcome as a couple but I think a lot of that experience would be a dealbreaker for someone who is conventional and well off, functional person trying to be in a relationship with a bunch of punks. They’re not just artsy, political guys in flashy clothes, a lot of punks deal with major addiction, homelessness, problems with authority, abusive relationship history, poverty, violence, criminal histories, general trauma. A lot of the ones I’ve met have very poor outlooks about women/relationships as well, having always been the outsider.
And I hate to say it but attraction is important. I like being with partners who are like me, act like me, style themselves like I do. I’ve never met a punk guy with a conventional girlfriend, only other Alt gals like me. I’ve been in relationships with men who aren’t Alt and it was a waste of time. There were just too many discomforts and growing pains about how we looked at and lived our lives.

This post was to get insight from strangers because anyone I’ve talked to about it is “only agreeing with me because we’re friends, doesn’t have a man or if it’s a male, because they want to sleep with me”.
