  1. Personally, I'd think “that would be a surprise” is neutral to positive response, as in you wouldn't make that joke yourself but you aren't against him making it whereas “that's really not me” is a clear boundary that you aren't comfortable with that joke- so, I would see them as very different responses. It's not anyone's fault, if he wasn't raised catholic or around catholicism, he really won't know what it means to be a devout catholic (I was raised catholic, though my parents encouraged me to choose my own path and evaluate faith on my own terms, so I have a pretty good idea of what devout catholic means, I think).

Simply, I would agree that you two aren't compatible. Religion is a huge piece of identity and one of the biggest things that can make or break a couple, and it seems pretty clear that you two don't have the same ideas here (which is no one's fault, neither of you are right nor wrong, just simply different).

  2. We moved in together after about 6 months of dating

Most people in their late 30s have zero interest in dating a 21/22 year old….rushing into living together? Argh.

Once my boyfriend found out he was rightly so upset.

Stop that bs right there. Some people are friends with exes, for others, it's a no-go. Be transparent from the start, and if someone minds, they're not a good match for you.

  3. If he doesn’t feel it, he doesn’t feel it, but at the same time you deserve to have someone head over heels in love with you. I just don’t see this relationship going well when after a 1.5 years he can’t even admit to being serious about you…. I’m sorry OP, you can’t force someone to love you. Find someone who does.
