Maybe consider 4. If you can't invite someone to your wedding it comes off as a pathetic bid for a gift to even tell them about the wedding before it happens. There's always a limit to how many guests can be there and if he's getting married in his mother's hometown half the list is probably blood relatives and family friends (and that's likely outside of his control). So he didn't “bother” to tell people he couldn't invite. Which makes sense if you really think about it.
