What's rubbing him wrong is that she needed a friend to do her talking for her. That made him uncomfortable, and rightly so. If she can't talk to him without a lawyer or guard present, that isn't a relationship and they're better off not being together.

You don’t have to be. Throughout your replies you seem to be thinking as if you have to maintain a relationship with this guy, but that’s not a thing. When a guy shows that he’s an asshole, break up with him and walk away. There’s no magical cure that will make an asshole into a good person. If he wanted to be a good person he’d be doing that. He’s being an asshole because that’s what he wants to do. He’s not unaware he’s making you unhappy—making you unhappy is in fact what he wants to do because it makes you and your mood more dependent on him. You can’t fix that, and his life is not your problem. Your life is your problem. When a guy shows that he sucks, don’t waste valuable years of your life trying to “fix” him. Leave and find someone who doesn’t need fixing. Repeat as necessary.
