Honestly a lot of the time I see people blackfishing I don't think its intentional either. I really don't have strong feelings about this one if I'm being honest with you OP, blackfishing is a nuanced and complex dynamic that primarily effects black women and I'm a mixed man, so I don't really have an experience with it. But I tend to err on the side that women black women raise concerns of this nature, they should be taken seriously more often than not. There is certainly an element of outrage culture that could be associated with it, but my experience has been first hand that so often black women's complaints or advocating for themselves or their experienced is dismissed that I prefer to view them as valid until being given a reason not.
Your post doesn't have enough information for me to really know if your gf is blackfishing or not, I just think Kate's response is an indication that she very-well may be. Even if she's not doing it intentionally, the source of the fashion trend for light women excessively tanning comes from black fishing (see Ariana Grande, who I'm guessing has a transition similar to your gfs).
