I think you have to consider the very likely scenario that was robbed at this strip club. It's not uncommon for people to be extorted out of money by security if they feel like they're tourists or that they don't frequent clubs often. I know people who've been drugged, intimidated or otherwise robbed at the ATM by staff, it happens all the time.
It sounds out of character for him, and $800 is a ridiculous amount to lose in one visit. You've mentioned earlier that he feels off telling you at all because he didn't know how. There's likely a lot of shame he's processing right now so communication isn't going to be a strong point right now.
