Yes, it’s really ignorant to not understand that there is a difference between attraction and gender presentation. To not understand that how someone views themselves doesn’t magically change depending on who they are attracted to.
I would knock on his door, and politely ask “Hey, can we talk for a minute? I feel like things aren’t going well between us. I feel like neither one of us is happy. I feel that neither one of us is having their needs met. I’m not sure that you and I are a compatible couple. I think it would be best for both of us if we were no longer BF/GF.”

Sounds like the boyfriend went with the better option. It could be about terms, but if it were me I think I would struggle at the… difference of standing, if that’s a good way to say it. You will be a father, both biologically and legally, but she won’t be a mother. Another woman, who is an ex to you, is the mother both biologically and legally. She would always remain on a different level than you. She has no rights to him if she started to love him (and something happened to you) and he would probably always love the two of you unequally.
