You’re valid with your fears. The pill in not 100% protective. I had a very close friend many years ago who got pregnant with twins while she was on the pill. She was 16 years old and had har twins at 17. She doesn’t regret it because they’re here but she certainly wasn’t ready for parenthood.
I think it is about shared ideals, beliefs, political views but also lifestyle, memories, culture, etc. My partner and I consider ourselves alternative people but aside from a few tattoos/piercing we don't lean any particular way aesthetically. When you find the right person you will be able to communicate and live those shared beliefs – if it's the wrong person, it really doesn't matter how either of you dress, it just won't work.
