Disconnect means from the daily grind not a relationship. I have serious depression and anxiety and a trip alone to the Dominican changed my perspective on a lot of things. It gave me confidence and the knowledge that I could do anything and get around a country on my own.

Definitely not impossible — a common type of financial abuse involves a higher earning partner insisting on separate accounts and a 50/50 split, such that the lower earner ends up spending all of their money on their share of the joint expenses and has nothing left for themselves
That's obviously not what's going on here, but you can have financial abuse with any type of account set up.
