Some people do, sure, but if you know your partner is straight and you're in a hetero relationship and then transition, you have to know it's very possible they won't want to stay with you, and it's fairest to them to acknowledge that.
It sounds like OP is now feeling guilty that she has to crush her partner's hopes for their relationship/future, during what is undoubtedly a difficult time for both of them in different ways. In general, going through a breakup isn't as hot as coming out as trans, but OP's partner has been thinking about this for a while; for OP, this is a shock, it'll bring with it grief, probably confusion, by the sounds of it guilt for not being able to continue the relationship… It would be less awkward and uncomfortable for both of them if OP's partner acknowledged between them that two women might not be the best pairing when at least one of them is straight.
Im not saying you're guaranteed to break up, but expect the worst and you can't be disappointed, or make other people feel like they're disappointing you – especially when it comes to something like their sexuality, which they can't control.
