  1. I empathize OP. My brother is similar- borderline personality disorder.

He doesn't follow through. He expects and waits for his family to “make him feel better”. He has no relationship with his own child; has no friends and no exterior support system. He is about to be released from the hospital after being diagnosed with “failure to thrive”. He should be hospitalized permanently but refuses and doesn't meet the involuntary threshold. It has become a family problem based on other maladaptive family issues.

For my sanity, I have had to really detach from his situation. He is 67 years old and made decisions from over 30/40 years ago when he was first urged into counseling. His life has been a serious of dramatic events for which he will seek intermittent help, then poop out and abandon his treatment. He doesn't try to fight for his own mental health. He just sits back passively and waits for the world to fix things for him. It is exhausting and far too much to take on.

So your challenge is radical acceptance. Accepting what it is.

The next step is to set your own boundaries. Figure out how much you can afford to give mentally to the situation and be firm in not going above and beyond that. Perhaps all you can do is offer words of encouragement for your mother to listen and obey what is being suggested to her by professionals. Perhaps all you can do is allow her to vent for five minutes before you discontinue the call.

You may feel pressure to rescue your mom because it is your mom. However, as others have pointed out- you have to care for yourself first. Some people cope by helicoptering and swooping in to “care” for the mentally ill and may pressure you to do the same. Be firm with your limits and realize you don't need to justify yourself to anyone.
