First, what was his reasoning for winging it? Did he get a huge burst of emotion in the moment and just decided right then and there he couldn’t wait? Or was he perhaps feeling so much pressure to make it special that he ended up being a deer in the headlights and didn’t plan anything at all? I think getting him to open up to find out the root cause could be helpful.
I understand he already did it, but if it would help you feel better, you can always ask him for a small ‘re-do.’ Perhaps give him 3 options to pick from. For example:
A special dinner at a restaurant A mini weekend drive to a gorgeous scenic spot A fun but short-ish scavenger hunt in the city
Like you yourself come up with 3 ways you’d like him to make it up to you, and then let him decide which and so he’ll actually have to plan it.
If he’s not the type to be super creative and easily plan things, you might just have to help him out from time to time. All guys are different and it’s ok if you need to help in certain situations to ensure they do something to their fullest potential.

It's sad how a bad person just has to act nice to a 21 year old to keep her, and she's too young to see a major red flag.
This one, a healthy friend or boyfriend will never mock or belittle you. Everyone deserves to surround themselves with better people than that.

gosh that sucks too. I am so sorry. But yeah just feels strange, because otherwise the friendship seems quite genuine but i guess there is nothing good about it
