You appear to have a couple options:
Work part-time and be happy. Work full time and be miserable.
What you really need to do is sit with your gf and discuss how you both see your future. Because it seems you see different futures. Wow! Great to have rent controlled for life. You sound like you are living a full life. Working out, volunteering your time. This sounds like a dream to me. Quite frankly, from your comments you are coming from two different places.
In America we would say she’s seeing a home in the suburbs with the white picket fence a couple kids and a dog. You are happy living a relaxed and stress free life doing the things you love. It seems like you two have different pics of your future. HAVE THAT TALK NOW.
Off the bat, you know him better than any of us so it’ll be hot for any of us to suggest the proper way to do something like this not knowing the type of person he is or humor he has. Be mindful of that.

As such, depending on how well you know his humor, you could consider telling him that you accidentally broke his laptop doing [make it up]. Just make sure you keep it safe.
