He may be so emotionally empty that he just doesn't know. Sometimes, that can cause people to be unable to make relationship decisions. Or any decisions. And pressuring them for answers will just make it worse. Try to be a small emotional presence for him if you want to help him. Try to be upbeat and positive, but not “fake,” you are able. It may not get him back, but it may possibly help him to be less broken (in time).
This is pure ego. I'm guessing that he didn't actually care about you, and then guilt-tripping you into some emotional fallacy so that he didn't have to bear the burden of sabotaging the relationship.
This is coming from me, a guy who has done these things (prior to therapy and medication). Which, whatever, my experience isn't an absolute, but I do see familiar signs.
