This sounds like your partner was in a kind FwB connection. The point is that it seems that he was clear from the start on what he expected from the relationship but when she moved the goal posts by declaring they were in a formal relationship, showing she had different expectations to their connection – he got upset as he felt she was braking the expectations.
This is difficult as people can enter into FwB relationships where the focus is supposedly on sex and friendship but when one of the parties starts developing feelings for the other / this can in principle end horribly – with a lot of hurt on both sides. It is easy to blame him – but really this is due to both of them as they did not ensure things were open and clear what was going on.
I think – if you like your bf – you should look at how he behaves now. He seems to want to be in a formal relationship and keeping this in the open. This is completely different from this FwB relationship he was in. Personally I would not use what happened as a yardstick on yours and his relationship – and continue with a lot of communication and clarity on expectations and behaviour.
Unless of cause you do not like him / and then you should split up.
