There's definitely a social aspect side that I would tread on carefully. I think tanning and having darker skin is not an issue nor is cosplaying. But if Lana went full-on blackface, then I 100% agree with Kate.
Does Lana have any other cosplay clothes she dressed up as or is this her first time? If you have proof that Lana has cosplayed as other characters in the past and it's a hobby she wants to continue, you can show proof to Kate that there's no ill intent obviously. A compromise would be to cosplay as someone else this year, talk to Kate about the cultural differences that Lana might not be aware of and also have Lana know about the impact of racism with blackfacing within America.
One thing I will point out, don't ever mention “she's just taking advantage of her tan” as a point again. That makes choosing the skin color of the character a lot more intentional, which I see why Kate would be upset about.

He cheated on you and now you’re asking for advice on how to get even before you go to his house for closure. Honestly if your goal was to show him that you’re done you’re failing spectacularly. The best thing you could do to hurt him is restricting access to you forever and learning to be happy again.
So much of me wants to make comments like that, but then she takes it seriously and says things like “fine, go for it. You said it not me” and then I just regret it. I wish I could make her feel like shit about it but she just doesn’t :/
