You did the right thing by ending it because it's important to be with someone who values the same thing. Now you know that he doesn't and he had to have an important talk with himself about what he wants in life. Maybe he settled with having a traditional life if it means you. There is nothing wrong with that. But he has to know that it needs to be the right choice. If he grows to resent you, it isn't. So he has to promise not to resent you for it ever, and if he does end up doing so, then it'll not be your fault one bit.

That's totally fair that it wasn't obvious, he sounds like someone who is good at minor manipulations and getting what he wants out of pity. And I would say that he isn't the worst, but it's just clear that he has no respect for your feelings or your wishes, so I am relieved to hear you'll be ending it.
