Yeah that doesn't take long. Probably a year at most. Feeding another person for that time frame shouldn't be too hot as long as he has a job.
I will sound judgemental here but it sounds like he didn't really make you choose between your family and him but rather you got too narrowminded thinking those two options won't work together and thought you had to choose.
Even if you chose to go to him, that doesn't mean you lose your family. It's rather simple to fly from point a to point b as long as you have funds and mindset to plan.
Now I get that he probably did and said things that hurt you. I worked in different kitches and have an idea how things can be… heated and stressful and how much tiring the end of the day can be after being infront of flames and heat.
But he's also living his dream and working towards a career he enjoy. He's probably crushed when his mother cried.
I would honestly say that if it's not too late, I would rekindle the relationship. You guys can still make it work with some sacrifices but hey, like they said, it will just take time.
