Tbf. I've had androids since… around 2010 atp. There definitely is an option for messages to auto delete to save space BUT 1. You have to enable it via settings, I've never known it to be a default setting… and 2. It only deletes message in particular order, e.i oldest messages go first …there are no options to change this. So he's still lying one way or another.
