Empathy is a very normal human trait so when someone feels the need to announce not only that they're empathetic, but that they're extra special super duper empathetic it just comes off as weird and performative. Like they're trying to one-up everyone with how sensitive and insightful they are. I also think it allows them to manipulate people by getting them to open up and then convincing them that they don't know their own feelings as well as the self-proclaimed empath. It's creepy. I stay away from “empaths.”
