Kind of, but she was just his girlfriend, not his wife, and ultimately all of the risk was on him. She wasn't facing any risk here, it wasn't her money. If you're dating someone, even if they're living in your house, but you have completely separate finances, you are still just boyfriend and girlfriend, not husband and wife, and that completely changes things.
