At the end of the day we all have our own struggles whether they're money-related or not, life isn't fair, and excessively dwelling on who has it easier than you or who has it harder is not good for your well-being. Therapy is the thing to do here. Learn to focus on the things within your control, not the things outside of your control. Assess your life with internal metrics (happiness, stress level, goals achieved, etc) and learn to redirect yourself away from using other people's lives as a metric to assess your own.

Yes there is. The whole first half of your twenties you grow like crazy. This woman may be chronologically only 16 years older than him, but emotionally she is — or should be — more like 50 years older. So either: 1. She didn't do any of that growing, which is creepy; or 2. She likes him because he hasn't and she has such a massive edge over him in terms of her ability to manipulate him, which is creepy. There isn't really an answer that doesn't make her look bad.

How long have you actually not been in a long distance relationship? Just a few months? It sounds like maybe you both were not compatible and didn't take the time to try being in-person.
Couples therapy could help. You both need to learn to set, maintain, and respect boundaries.
