I'm pretty sure both your boyfriend and Jane know that getting matching tattoos that say “love you xoxo” isn't a platonic thing to do. Throwing an ff in there doesn't change it.
They may be nothing more than friends, but there was no reason for your boyfriend to accuse you of being controlling when you brought up how intimate a tattoo with those words is and your feelings about it.
I guess I would have another talk with your boyfriend and ask him why he chose to react that way when you brought it up. He's 45 and having a controlling ex isn't really an excuse. It's obvious that anyone would reasonably find “love you stupid, xoxo” to be a little iffy. You don't like the way he dismissed your feelings during the whole thing, and you find it odd that he wasn't willing to compromise between his girlfriend and his best friend and just get a tattoo with the slice of cheese. Also, the fact that Jane's husband has probably known them for longer and seemed uncomfortable with it should tell you something.
