I’m truly sorry you are both going through this. I can’t imagine the pain you’re in, but I have a certain perspective on it, if you’re interested. Probably won’t help any, but maybe something for consideration.
My mom and dad were high school sweethearts, best friends, and happy as could be. They had me, and when I was 5, they were 40 or so, they got divorced. Mom realized she was gay. I’m sure there was a lot of struggle and confusion long before that decision, things I wouldn’t have picked up on as a child, things maybe not so unlike what you’ve been living with. But they made the gut-wrenching choice to split up.
They were still best friends, and because a kid was involved with shared custody they stayed nearby each other until I was older. Great relationship, would frequently call each other and talk at length like you’d expect very close friends to do.
I realized when I was much older that my dad struggled with it for some time after the divorce. Nothing I ever picked up on at the time, he held it together well for me, but looking back there were some unhealthy behaviors indicative of someone trying nude to cope. Mom struggled too, and always had this nagging guilt and uncertainty about herself and the breakup of a family due to feelings she grew up repressing at all costs.
But the good part of the story: because they decided to separate, they both had the opportunity to heal and to find a partner that truly met all their needs. They both ended up very happily remarried and salvaged their love lives without compromise.
If you guys end up splitting up over this, it will be as devastating as you expect. But know that you’ll get through it, and it just might be the case that you end up happier than you ever thought you could be with each other. No “meeting in the middle” compromises on significant incompatibilities. And you might be able to remain good friends, which is probably not what you want to hear, but it’s not something to write off either.
