Gonorrhea can be relatively asymptomatic and can lay dormant with no symptoms. There’s no rhyme or reason to when symptoms appear.
I’ve known folks who have traced it back to their partner from years ago as the source and had sex with multiple people who never got it. The chances of getting it increases with each condomless sex act though so the more you have sex with one person, the more likely it is to be transmitted.
It is highly, highly unlikely to be spread through kissing alone, but it can be spread through oral sex.
False negatives are unlikely – data in the US ranges from 0-10%. Negatives are usually most common when gonorrhea is brewing in the body but it’s not enough to be detectable on the highly sensitive tests being used now. It takes about 7 days for gonorrhea to reach testable levels and 14 for chlamydia. So if you got gonorrhea on Monday and then tested on Tuesday, it may not show up. But if you got it on Monday and tested two weeks later, it would.
So either one of you had it for a while and didn’t know it – that’s unlikely if you were both testing negative. Or she had sex with someone recently who had it. If you were both getting tested, my money is on that one.
