There are two things that contribute to an erection: mental arousal and physical touch. Ideally both of those are in sync for the guy and things feel amazing. Sometimes the mental is there but it's not enough to get an erection, sometimes the guy isn't into it but he (or another) can physically stimulate the penis to “force” an erection. But if these two elements are working against each other, obviously it's much harder to achieve and maintain the erection. But not impossible. And if you are mentally into it and then something happens that quickly tears your mind out of the mood (i.e. blood or a fart or a had sex move or pain, etc), that can quickly kill the erection.
