My mother set up her will for her assets to be split with me and my three step-siblings. I am technically an only child, but my step-siblings are included. For her life insurance policy, she is leaving it to me alone. However, she is giving a certain percentage of it to a step-daughter from a previous marriage that ended in divorce. Also, she has accounted for every single piece of her property by giving it to people in her life. In the end, I am getting a few pieces of her property, 1/4 of her estate (house), and the value of her life insurance policy, less the percentage previously mentioned. My mother was very concerned about my feelings about this and lost a lot of sleep over it. I told her that it is her will, her estate, and she can do with it whatever she wants. It can be argued that I am the only child and everything should go to me, but my mother’s happiness and respecting her wishes was more important to me.
We can all be butthurt by the decisions made by others, but the important thing is the relationships we have with people. I would rather have my mother than the money, and I’m sure your friend feels the same way.
