From a guys perspective who has two jobs and refused to get married. I had a girlfriend who demanded marriage and I said the door is right there, thankfully she left.
He is absolutely stressed out at work. If his job is physical and it’s requiring him to work 8 am to 9 pm and I am in finance and I have done those hours maybe not the physical stuff. The last thing I want to do when I get home is have any kind of discussion about my relationship status.
I would wait until his workload had calmed down to approach him again. Why add to his stress and frustration?

In my opinion most modern men and women should not get married. They aren’t capable of having long term relationships and don’t have the capacity for it.
My grandfather also worked in finance like me and he had a brutal schedule. He worked on Wall Street for decades. My grandmother understood the best time to talk to him mostly weekends. They would have discussions but there was always an understanding of time and place. My grandmother wasn’t timid or meek. She just understood the kind of stress my grandfather lived with and respected him and the kind of life he provided for his family. They stayed together until my grandmother died at 91 and my grandfather died at 94. More than 70 years together is a testament to traditional marriage.
