I would suggest therapy for your wife might be beneficial to help deal with the toxic family dynamics and create a plan of action. My family is toxic in a different way, but therapy has really helped me with dealing with them and setting boundaries. You can offer to go with her and also do couples therapy to deal with the family strains on you and your wife's relationship.
